Frequently Asked Questions
Offsite Backup
What is offsite backup and why do I need it? Top
Offsite backup is the process of replicating your important data to a geographically distinct location. This ensures that a copy of your critical data remains safely protected and recoverable, even in the case of severe accident or natural disaster. What would be a business-ending catastrophe, has become only an inconvenience.
Why should I change my existing backup plan? Top
Because as technology changes and your needs grow, your pre-existing backup plan may no longer meet you current disaster recovery requirements, or may not be the most cost effective solution for protecting your data. By evaluating new backup technologies, such as Zettabits, you can save your business time, money, and perhaps prevent the future loss of your critical data.
Why do I need offsite Backup? Top
Offsite backup provides a level of protection for your important data which is unatainable by any other means. If you or your business depend on your data, you simply cannot afford to gamble on anything less.
How secure is Zettabits offsite backup? Top
Extremely secure. Comprehensive data encryption procedures ensure that the data in your offsite archive is as safe as the money in your bank account. Your data is fully encrypted with AES-256 before ever leaving your onsite zBox, and all data transmission is done over securely authenticated 128-bit SSL connections. Additionally, your zBox is automatically part of the Zettabits zCPR maintenance and monitoring system, which guarantees that it will always have the latest security updates to ensure the safety and security of your data.
Zettabits
Why is Zettabits better than other offsite storage providers? Top
Every Zettabits service plan is based around a powerful zBox onsite storage server. As well as providing NAS functionality and automatic ESS backup, the dedicated zBox hardware gives Zettabits a level of data backup performance and efficiency that is unmatched by software-only backup systems.
In addition to the advantages provided by the onsite zBox hardware, Zettabits is easy to setup and easy to use. Simply store data on your zBox, and it will be automatically backed up. No additional setup or configuration is required.
To learn more about the powerful zBox platform, please
visit the zBox information page.
Don't other offsite storage providers offer local hardware? Top
Most serious data backup providers include a local staging server, like a zBox, as part of the backup plan. Most also require that their customers either buy the staging hardware upfront, at prices greatly inflated over the cost of hardware, or pay an additional monthly fee for rental of the hardware. With Zettabits, there is no additional fee for your zBox. It is an integral part of the Zettabits service and thus included in our already industry leading low rate.
Additionally, because your zBox is included as a fully integrated piece of the Zettabits service, upgrades and replacements occur at no additional cost to you.
What is included in the Zettabits flat-rate pricing? Top
Everything you need to get the most out of your Zettabits. There are no additional expenses for any aspect of the service, from delivery to recovery. For a more complete list of what Zettabits includes, please click

The Backup
What sort of data can I backup with Zettabits? Top
Zettabits is completely application agnostic, meaning that you can use Zettabits to safely backup any sort of application or other data that you require. If your data is stored on a zBox, or accessible through a network share, it can be backed up.
How often is my data backed up to off-site locations? Top
Your data is backed up every hour. Each backup scans for changes that have been made to your data since the last backup was completed. If it takes longer than an hour to synchronize all new or changed files to the offsite archive, due to the amount of updated data or because of your Internet connection speed, the backup will run for as long as required to update your data.
Will Zettabits work with my Internet connection? Top
Almost certainly. Zettabits has been designed to work well with a very wide range of Internet connection speeds and reliability levels. Current Zettabits customers have connections ranging from high-error-rate radio links, to extremely high-speed dedicated connections.
If you have a very slow connection, Zettabits will be able to backup more of your data because your zBox works 24/7, never needing to pause while you use your computers for other tasks. Additionally, all zVault backup activity is fault tolerant and will resume updating a large file right from where it left off, even if you suffer a temporary loss of Internet connectivity or power.
If you have a very fast connection, the powerful zBox hardware will ensure that you are able to fully utilize it to achieve the most up-to-date backups possible.
Is there any cap on my data backup speed? Top
No. Unlike some other providers, Zettabits never places an artificial limit on your data backup rates. With Zettabits, your updated data will be transferred to the offsite archive as fast as your Internet connection and zBox hardware will allow, ensuring that your backups will always be as up-to-date as possible.
What if my connection is interrupted while my zBox is backing up a very large file? Top
No problem. Zettabits uses a block-based data backup protocol, so if the transfer of a very large file is interrupted mid-way through, it will be automatically resumed right from where it left off.
Compatibility
Will Zettabits work in my mixed Windows, OSX, or Linux network? Top
Yes, Zettabits works with any system that supports the SMB/CIFS protocol, including all modern versions of Windows, OS X, and Linux. If you would like to verify that Zettabits will work with your particular environment, please
contact us about an evaluation.
Can I store and work with files or data directly on my zBox? Top
Absolutely. You can use the zBox as you would any other quality NAS device, with the added bonus of completely automatic backup of any data stored on it.
Security
How secure is a zBox? Top
The zBox is built upon the same reliable Linux foundation as many frontline web and data servers. Additionally, each zBox is protected by its own internal firewall and makes use of the latest in grsecurity patches (http://www.grsecurity.net/). Finally, as part of the Zettabits service, your zBox is in frequent communication with our secure update servers, ensuring that if a problem ever was found with zBox security, you would be updated within minutes.
Other companies claim to use 448-bit encryption, why does Zettabits use only 256 bit encryption keys? Top
Because at Zettabyte Storage we care about more than just the impression of security. Many companies proudly list the 448-bit keylength of blowfish, state that it is larger than the 256-bit keys used in AES, and exclaim that blowfish has never been broken. While these statements are true, they are also completely meaningless. Neither Blowfish nor AES have ever been broken, and there is a lot more to encryption algorithms than the length of their keys.
When choosing between two encryption ciphers with equally spotless records, the best you can do is to look at how those records were generated. Simply put, no other encryption algorithm in the history of cryptography has received more scrutiny than the Rijndael cipher used in AES. It has been examined extensively by researchers around the world, and is certified by the NSA as suitable for the encryption of even those documents classified "TOP SECRET".
